Ski Equipment
Learning to ski has become quite the popular hobby in recent years. After the decision has been made to become a skier, a full set of equipment will be needed to enjoy this hobby to the fullest, and also for safety measures. Looking at a ski magazine can help you choose which equipment brand you prefer, but a list of basic ski equipment is also helpful.
You will first and foremost need a good pair of quality made skis. The type you choose will depend on which type of skiing you will be doing. One important factor in purchasing your first set of skis will be to make sure they are made of a sturdy material and that you also feel comfortable in them.
Ski poles are a must have in skiing equipment. Most experienced skiers recommend that an adjustable pole is the very best type and the most versatile. Some ski poles are made of a poly fiber material that is light in weight, yet still serviceable for almost all skiing expeditions. The carbon fiber poles are lighter which allows for a lighter swing weight. More experienced skiers may enjoy a fixed length pole made out of a material such as aluminum.
Ski boots are an essential piece of ski equipment. Looking at the different styles and brands in a ski magazine may be helpful in choosing which style you like the best, but the most important thing to consider is comfort and a very good fit. Another important factor for purchasing ski boots is the type of liner they come with. You will want your feet to stay warm and dry, but not feel constricted. It is recommended that you make sure the ski boot has ample room for your toes to be able to move freely, but of course not too much room that will make turning sharp edges harder to perform properly. Warm well fitting clothes are a necessary ski equipment item. Choosing your skiing outfit will depend on what type of weather conditions you will be in, and comfort.
There are also several items that are recommended for safety measures. One such item is a small shovel. Any light weight, easy to carry shovel will do nicely. An ice ax made of a sturdy yet lightweight material is a good piece of ski equipment to have on hand, as well as a head lamp. Head lamps do not need to be overly large and heavy. They can be purchased in styles made specifically for skiers. Warm socks that do not constrict blood flow in the feet are very important to prevent frost bite in case of an accident. Insulated clothing such as long johns are recommended for extra warmth. They can be purchased in a light weight material.
If your ski outfit does not include a hat, you will need to purchase one. Fleece works very well for keeping the head and ears warm, without being too tight. Sunglasses are important, as are gloves. Many styles of gloves can be seen in a ski magazine. A back pack is essential to carry items such as food, water in a small thermos, a small first aid kit and sun screen. Lip screen is also an important piece of ski equipment. If you are not skiing with a guide it is recommended that you also carry a small map and a compass.
